Artist's Statement

Feral Woman, 2006

The journal of a feral woman is a dark piece. It was made for a Kube show at Tallaght arts centre and there are nine small images in this part of the show. On the other side of the screen were 9 much lighter pieces called journal of a country woman. I had been reading an Edwardian diary and what interested me most was what had been left out of this personal notebook. I used my own poetry, and other bits of writing from my journal to make feral woman the visual language speaks in a metaphorical manner and the piece demands the viewer’s own interpretations be put on the work. Each small work had a small hand written label set in glass beneath it. Some of the words could be read others were deliberately indecipherable.

Landscapes, 2005

While I am not in awe of the landscape I am dependent upon it for both the physical and spiritual quality of my life. I am most content when I am recording or remembering, I use my notebooks to make small sketches of what moves me and then I translate this into a visual language back in my Wicklow studio. Looking at this work I want the viewer to also experience a walk through a little farmyard or across the open countryside, maybe to identify with a secret place or remember freezing winters when small waterfalls were frozen into icicles looking like a winter slide.
