Artist’s StatementI often perceive the world more powerfully through its undercurrents than through its "surfaces". Words like echoes and traces describe this perception and I have tried to translate these into a visual language The visible surface of a frozen lake or land, for instance, is reminiscent of the dividing membrane between the subconscious and the conscious, where some fragments of dreams and memories surface and others remain buried. My paintings are very much influenced by music: some music is distinctly blue or peach or vanilla - multlayered sound of colours My work process involves a mixture of automatism and
studies from reality. Through this process, in conjunction
with the layering process of opaque and transparent paint,
"winged creatures" among other things have often
emerged. My main interest is ambiguity, with which I like to
draw the viewer into a world of dreams, where things often
are not what they seem. | |||

The
act of painting expresses and translates the secret places
of inner landscapes, where words no longer matter. As a
Swiss-born painter I have been living and working in
Ireland, where I studied Fine Art at Dun Laoghaire Institute
of Art, Design and Technology. Current exhibitions by Ruth Lockhart can be seen at the Hayward and Mill Cove Galleries
